Cell phone radiation linked to cancer
Cell phone radiation could pose a risk of certain cancers, the preliminary findings of two new major studies from the National Institutes Health suggest. Six percent of male rats exposed to the same kind of radiation our cell phones emit - though in much larger quantities - developed a type of cancer called a schwannoma in their hearts.
Smartphones and other wireless devices put out small amounts of low frequency microwave radiation when they connect networks and transmit information. This energy is not nearly as strong as ultraviolet radiation or X-ray energy, but the new studies add to the mounting evidence that even microwave radiation, in high doses, can pose some health risks.
The NTP researchers exposed rats and mice to high levels of radiation over the course of 18 hours each day, alternating 10-minute exposures with 10-minute periods without exposures. Radiation surges when cell phones are trying to connect to faint network signals or transmit large amounts of information.
Stop sleeping with your cell phone: Anything closer than arm's length could cause cancer and infertility, health officials warn. Experts warn that it is these inconsistent exposures that make the devices risky. There were 'statistically significant' differences in the incidence of heart schwannoma tumors in rats.
Schwannomas develop from peripheral nervous cells, called Schwann cells. They develop inside the sheath that covers nerves, wrapping and interfering with nerves themselves. In humans, these tumors are usually benign. These noncancerous schwannomas are most common in the vestibular nerve that connects the brain and the ear.
Malignant schwannomas can start anywhere, but seem to be most common in the leg, arm or lower back, sometimes causing a bump, pain, muscle weakness or tingling. Though they are not common in human hearts, cardiac tissue is a good target for cell phone radiation. Microwave radiation works by heating water. Muscle tissue - like the heart - is 75 percent water, while fat, for example, is only about 10 percent water.
That means that muscular tissues are especially affected by cell phone radiation, which may explain why the nerve tumors were most likely to form in a highly muscular organ. Counter-intuitively, bigger animals are more sensitive to radiation. The higher rate of tumors in males 'was probably due to the fact that male rats simply absorb more radiation than females as a function of the size of the animal.
Cancer risks for mice were negligible, and female rats that were pregnant - and therefore larger - were also more sensitive to radiation. The levels of microwave radiation the animals were exposed to were much higher than we encounter from human cell phones, humans are, larger than rats. It is also worth note that radiation exposures in the study would still comply with federal regulations on heat microwave heat generated by cell phones, and still there were increased risks of at least one cancer for rats.

Probiotics for respiratory illness
There is growing evidence probiotics can reduce the risk and duration of respiratory tract infections, as well as reducing antibiotic use. Replicating a research model used in France, researchers examined the potential clinical and economic impacts in Canada.
The study included researchers from Western, Lawson Health Research Institute, Laval University and Utrecht University. It incorporated two separate scenarios from two meta-analyses. A meta-analysis combines data from multiple studies using a statistical approach.
Results from the study showed regular probiotic use could eliminate respiratory tract infections. Respiratory tract infections are highly contagious infections of the sinus, throat or airways, including influenza. Although respiratory tract infections are typically viral, about one-quarter of patients are also prescribed antibiotics (which offer benefit only against bacterial infections).
Antibiotics can have serious side effects like destroying many beneficial bacteria in the human body. This is why the use of probiotics is an important defense against respiratory tract infections.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host and can be consumed in products such as yogurt.
People are increasingly making probiotics a part of their daily diet or dietary supplements for their Probiotics can also be used to prevent respiratory tract infections.

Intermittent fasting prevents aging
Intermittent fasting can keep the body younger, extend lifespan and improve overall health, various forms of fasting are healthy; from weight loss to productivity enhancement. According to the latest research, temporary restricting diet keeps the mitochondria – an important part of the cell to health aging – in homeostasis, which improves lifespan.
Some research has shown that intermittent fasting offers no benefits over daily dietary restrictions, but animal studies have found that it was linked to longer life spans. The latest research confirmed the crucial role of the mitochondria in human cell aging, and therefore, the aging of human bodies.
Mitochondria break down carbohydrates and fatty acids, giving energy to the cell. For this reason, they are often referred to as the powerhouses of human cells. Researchers discovered that without aged mitochondria, cells appeared younger.

HIV positive smokers may die of lungs cancer
HIV patients who smoke cigarettes are more likely to die from lung cancer than from HIV, antiviral drugs increased the life span of HIV patients
but there is no drug for preventing lung cancer that is as effective as antiretroviral therapy ART for HIV.
According to researchers, lung cancer prevention through smoking cessation should be a priority in taking care of people living with HIV. Researchers examined people with HIV who were current, former and never smokers.
They discovered that people who consistently take their anti-HIV medications but continue to smoke will die of lung cancer. Lung cancer is one of the leading killers of people with HIV, smoking and HIV put them at risk of developing lung cancer at a rate higher than smokers not infected with HIV.
Smoking and HIV are bad combination when it comes to lung cancer. Smoking cessation is one of the most important things that people living with HIV can do to improve their health and live longer. It will reduce their risk of lung cancer, heart attack, stroke, and emphysema.

Dangers of sitting for twelve hours
Those who sit for one to two hours at a time without moving have a higher mortality rate than those who remain on the same position for less hour.
Short or long sedentary lifestyle have negative impact on health.
The researchers used hip-mounted activity monitors to measure inactivity during working hours over a period of seven days in some participants for the research.
They discovered that sedentary lifestyle is responsible for increased mortality risk. Being sedentary for more than 13 hours in a day increases the risk of untimely death. The researchers also discovered that participants who sit for less than 30 minutes had the lowest risk of death.
Active lifestyle can reduce the risk of untimely death, keep moving. Avoid sitting for long hours or minutes, physical activity can reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression and some cancers.

Indoor pollution can destroy lungs
Indoor pollution from central heating, gas cookers, cleaning products, chemicals, and mold can damage lungs, trigger asthma and cause respiratory diseases.
Poor ventilation, the use of open central heating and regular use of air conditioner prevents fresh and natural air from getting to our lungs, since we spend more time indoor. Our lungs is prone to damage because of regular exposure to indoor pollution.
Airtight contain a great number of pollutants and chemicals, many of which can have serious health effects on our health. Warmth, moisture and lack of ventilation also make it easier for bacteria and viruses to breed easily and spread indoor.
Central heating, pets, open fires, chemicals found in household cleaning agents like soap and detergents, the fumes generated by cooking, perfumes and dust. All these contributed to indoor pollution.
Moisture in airtight home encourages the proliferation of irritant mold and fungal spores as well as house-dust mites that trigger asthma attacks and breathing difficulties associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Good ventilation will create way for gaseous exchange and improve indoor air quality and prevents respiratory allergies. Getting rid of airborne allergens and improving indoor air can prevent respiratory allergies.

Menstruation does not affect working memory
Some women assumed their menstrual cycle controls their performance the way some experience stomach cramp and pain during menstruation.
The hormonal changes related to the menstrual cycle do not have any effect on cognitive performance. It does not influence cognitive performance.
Researchers examined different women at different stages for two menstrual cycles and discovered that progesterone and estrogen hormones released during menstruation have no effect on working memory.
Researchers looked for differences in performance between individuals and changes in performance over time and discovered nothing related to menstrual cycle. Menstrual cycle may cause pain and stomach cramp in some women, but it does not affect working memory.

HIV positive women with cytomegalovirus may infect their babies with the virus
HIV-positive women with cytomegalovirus CMV, in their urine at the time of delivery may pass the virus to their babies.
Women who had gonorrhea when they gave birth may also infect their babies with CMV. Babies infected through their mothers and those with weakened immune systems will experience serious health problems.
CMV can impair fetal growth, cause birth defects and babies born with the virus can have damage to their brain, liver, lung and spleen.
Researchers examined 260 pairs of mothers and 222 babies from who were enrolled in a perinatal study by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
After testing the mothers' and infants' urine for detectable CMV, the researchers discovered that- 2 percent of the women had detectable CMV and 3.8 percent of babies had the virus.
Eight percent of women with detectable CMV had babies with the virus, as opposed to 2.1 percent of women who did not have CMV.
Two percent of women with detectable CMV transmitted the virus to their babies compared with 8.1 of those who did not have CMV.

Long journey can cause depression
commutes are more likely to be stressed and depressed.
A study of more than 34,000 working British adults found journeys upwards of half-an-hour are damaging the nation's health and productivity.
They were 33 per cent more likely to suffer from depression.
Shaun Subel, director of strategy at VitalityHealth, said: 'The result demonstrates the significance of the daily work routine in influencing individuals' health and productivity.
Employers should be looking at
flexible working arrangements as a more prominent part of their workplace wellness.
Allowing employees the flexibility to avoid the rush-hour commute where possible, or fit their routine around other commitments can help reduce stress and promote healthier lifestyle.

Walking slowly may indicate heart failure
Slowing pace could be an early warning of heart failure, dementia or cardiac disease.
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology believe walking speed is as important as pulse rate or blood pressure.
They have developed a sensor that hangs on the wall and transmits radio waves to detect a person’s gait and stride length as they move about their home.
Experts think the WiGait device, which is roughly the size of a small flat screen TV, can predict the onset of health problems through analysing the data it records.
The technology has been tested in care homes in the US and was able to measure walking speed with an accuracy of 95 to 99 per cent in the research phase.
Users can check their walking speeds on the app and also receive alerts if they are not active and encouraging them to take more exercise.

How to disorganize bacteria for better infections treatment
Some bacteria are useful, good bacteria in gut - probiotics like GI Jake in gut aid digestion and fight with invading microbes.
Bacteria are everywhere, antibiotics are used to control bacteria that can cause health issues for humans, but some bacteria have developed resistance to common available antibiotics.
Researchers are looking at new method of treating infections that reduce the use of antibiotics.
Bacteria infect people by working in unity, living together in biofilm and communicate using chemical. This leads to severe bacteria attack on the host.
Scientists are trying to break the unity by shaking the bacteria at the right frequency to confuse them and prevent communication to reduce or prevent them from attacking the host.

Increase in weight increases death risk
A new study suggests increase in death risk for overweight and obese people. Being overweight or obese attract many diseases like: cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.
Scientists examined data from 225,000 people, after checking their weight history, the results shows that becoming overweight at any stage in life could have negative impact on health.
The overall risk of dying increased based on their maximum Body Mass Index BMI, 10 percent increased risk for the overweight, 34 percent for obese, and 98 percent for the morbidly obese.
Being underweight does not have advantage, underweight people have increase overall risk of death by 46 percent and 77 percent for heart disease.

Insufficient sleep can affect bone formation
Insufficient sleep can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, bone loss and have negative impact on your health.
According to national sleep foundation, the appropriate sleep duration for newborns is between 14 and 17 hours, between 12 and15 hours for infants, 11 and 14 hours for toddlers, 10 and 13 hours for preschoolers, 9 and 11 hours for school-aged, 8 and 10 hours for teenagers, 7 and 9 hours for young adults and 7 and 8 hours for older adults.
Three weeks of insufficient sleep can reduce levels of marker of bone formation in the blood, because lack of sleep alter bone balance and create a potential bone loss that can cause bone fracture and osteoporosis.
Inadequate sleep is very dangerous for bone formation in children because bone formation at tender age is very important for bone growth and long-term skeletal health in future.

Regular exposure to biocides can cause cancer
Biocide is a chemical substance for controlling the effects of harmful organisms. It can be found in sanitizers, disinfectant, and sterilizers.
Because of intrinsic property of biocide, we must be very careful while using chemical like hand sanitizers and the rest.
According to Dr Yawai Zhang of environmental health research at Yale University, health care providers and those that used chemical that contains biocide are at risk of developing thyroid cancer.
Researchers have not established the link between biocide and thyroid cancer, they hypothesize that biocide can alter thyroid hormone.

Body Mass Index alone cannot dictate your health status
Body Mass Index BMI is a measure of body size based on a person's weight and height, it is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters, then divide the answer by your height again.
Researchers at the University of Alberta state that BMI is not an indicator of how healthy you are and the metrics of judging obesity need to be changed.
According to Dr Sharma, someone with a BMI of 30 and above is said to be obese by the metrics but they may be perfectly healthy when you check their body metabolism.
People with BMI less than 30 may have problems that would improve if they lose weight.
BMI shows how big you are not how sick, it is not good to judge health status based on BMI alone.

HIV lesions treatments
HIV alters the body's immune system and this can leads to development of many health problem like skin infections.
Lesions are abnormal growths on the skin, it can grow on the skin of people who are not suffering from HIV, but it is common in people who are HIV positive.
It may develop as side effect of HIV medication, CD4 count is a blood test that measure the level of white blood cells in the body, if CD4 count is very low, the rate of developing skin lesions will be very high.
Common HIV skin lesions:
• Bullous impetigo
• Human papillomavirus (HPV) warts
• Prurigo nodularis
• Molluscum contagiosum
• Herpes simplex lesions
• Kaposi's sarcoma
Treatments
1. Taking antiviral medication according to Doctor's prescription may increase CD4 cells.
