Acid reflux may cause burping or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. The sphincter in the gullet fails to stay closed so stomach, food splash up, causing irritation and inflammation.
Burping is caused by the loose valve at the bottom of the oesophagus, which cannot withstand pressure from the stomach, so gas escapes upwards. It can also be a symptom of bowel conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease and lactose intolerance.
