Higher intake of yogurt and low-fat milk may reduce depression


Researchers discovered that those who consumed yogurt and low-fat milk may not develop symptoms of depression compared to those who did not.

Common symptoms of depression are: feeling of hopelessness, helpless, fatigue, persistent sadness and suicidal thought. These symptoms may vary from person to person; some may experience all the symptoms while others may experience few.

Prof. Ryiochi Nagatomi and colleagues examined how intake of diary products impact the risk of developing risk of depression.

The researchers included 1,159 adults from Japan aged between 19 and 83 years, they disclosed how often they drink yoghurt, low-fat and whole-fat  milk in a questionnaire.

The result shows that adults that consumed low-fat milk and yogurt between one and four times in a week were less likely to have symptoms of depression.
