SHARPIN aids cancer progression

Researchers have found a new role for the SHARPIN protein. In addition to being one of three proteins in the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex (LUBAC), regulating NFκB and other inflammatory molecules, SHARPIN modulates PRMT5, an epigenetic master switch that controls several proteins linked to melanoma.

SHARPIN, is best known for its role in LUBAC, which plays a direct role in inflammatory signaling. However, SHARPIN has a second life, regulating PRMT5, which methylates individual genes and the histones that package DNA, controlling a wide range of gene expression. PRMT5 has been linked to prostate, breast, lung and other cancers.

Using human melanoma cell lines, the researchers found that SHARPIN (but not fellow LUBAC proteins HOIP and HOIL-1L) increases PRMT5 activity, which boosts transcription factors SOX10, PAX3 and MITF, all of which contribute to melanoma growth. The researchers believe SHARPIN fine-tunes PRMT5, affecting how the enzyme methylates certain proteins, but not histones.

SHARPIN serves as a navigator, showing PRMT5 where to go and thus which proteins to methylate.
SHARPIN becomes important in tumors that have lost proteins CDKN2A and MTAP, which are co-deleted in around 15 percent of all cancers. When MTAP is deleted, PRMT5 activity is reduced. However, in those cases SHARPIN acts as a counterbalance, boosting PRMT5. Epidemiological data show that patients whose tumors lack MTAP, and have elevated levels of SHARPIN, have poorer prognosis.

Benefits of breast thermography

Breast thermography is the use of digital infrared imaging to detect charges in breast and temperature of the breast.

Thermography uses infrared imaging to detect any changes in the breast and locates abnormalities in breast.

Growing of cancer cells in any parts of the body leads to increase in blood flow to the area, this increase the temperature of the particular part of the body.

Abnormal rise in temperature will be detected during breast thermography if cancer cells are growing in the breast.

Breast thermography detects cancer or pre-cancerous cells at early stage, which leads to other breast examination.

Time zones may increase your risk of cancer

A new study suggests the effects of time zones can contribute to development of some cancers that are linked to change in biological clock.

Researchers examined data of 4 million adults from more than 600 countries who had been diagnosed with cancer between 2000 and 2012

They discovered that every 5 degree of longitude toward the west that a person lived from the eastern edge of their time zone increased risk of developing cancer.

Researchers said men who lived in the western-most region of a time zone had risk of developing prostate cancer, compared with men that lived in eastern-most regions of time zone.

They found that women living in the western-most region had risk of developing breast cancer compared to women living in eastern-most regions of time zone.

Normally, living things are supposed to be exposed to sun during the day and darkness at night but people stay indoor during the day and exposed to light at night, this can reduce melatonin at night, alter immune system and raise risk of developing cancer.

Diets can cause or prevent cancer

Breast cancer is the development of uncontrollable cancer cells in the breast. Age, lifestyle, diet, genetics and gender are factors that contribute to risk of developing breast cancer

Regular consumption of plant bases diet can reduce risk of developing cancer. Eight to ten servings of fruits and vegetables is recommended per day.

Foods rich in variety of fruits, vegetables, fibre, spices, good fat and nuts can reduce risk of having breast cancer.

Scientists have explored the contribution of different foods on the risk of developing breast cancer, it has become general advice to reduce consumption of these foods: red meat, sugar, fat, alcohol and processed foods.

Breastfeeding is not linked to baby's IQ

Breastfeeding is the feeding of babies with breast milk, breastfed children  show normal response to stimuli at age 3 according to new research.

Their is no link between breastfeeding and intelligence quotient, researchers from University College of Dublin measured the cognitive abilities of 8000 children who were breast fed and discovered that breast milk does not improve their intellect.

National Health Service NHS advocates exclusive 6 months breastfeeding for babies, food can be added from 6 months.

Breastfeeding is good for mothers because a breastfeeding mother can burn more than 500 calories a day.

Mediterranean diet may reduce the risk of cancer

According to International Journal of Cancer, Mediterranean diet may reduce the risk of estrogen-receptor-negative breast cancer, a postmenopausal form of disease with a poor prognosis.

In Netherlands, 63,573 women ages 55 to 69 tracked their diets for more than 20 years to detect impact of diet on  related disease. In the course of the study, 3354 women developed breast cancer, after excluding previous history and cases of Cancer, 2321 breast cancer cases were analyzed.

Post-menopausal estrogen-receptor-negative breast cancer was 40% less found in women that eat Mediterranean diet regularly.

Mediterranean diet is plant based diet that leads to sound health, strong bones, and prevention of all forms of disease.
