Foods for healthy hair

Hair loss can be down to hormonal changes, a medical condition, stress or nutritional deficiencies. Experts recommend foods with antioxidant flavonoids to strengthen hair follicles, iron-rich foods to boost red blood cells, and protein and silica-abundant foods to promote hair growth. Hair loss and thinning may be distressing, simple dietary changes could be all it takes to prevent fall outs, according to Neal's Yards Remedies' team of naturopaths, herbalists and nutritional therapists.

Mango-it provides the mineral silica, which is a component of connective tissue that helps to strengthen hair and promote its growth. Having two slices of mango as a snack can strengthen hair tissue and promote growth. Sprinkling a tablespoon of flaxseeds over meals nourishes hair and prevents it from becoming weak or brittle.

Foods derived from soy, such as edamame beans and tempeh, are thought to inhibit the formation of a hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT). An imbalance of DHT Collage contribute to hair loss.
Eggsis full of protein, eggs help to boost collagen production. Collagen surrounds hair strands, but breaks down as people age, leaving them vulnerable to breaking. Iron ensures healthy red blood cell production, while L-lysine facilitates iron absorption. A deficiency in both can impact hair loss.

Figs are a great source of iron, which is essential for healthy hair growth and shiny locks. Other good sources include dried fruits and berries. Flaxseeds - high in omega-3, these help nourish hair, which prevents it from drying out and becoming weak. Pumpkin seed-protein-rich seeds provide zinc, which supports cellular reproduction and enhances immunity, leading to hair growth.

Berries-high in collagen-boosting vitamin C, berries aid iron absorption. Vitamin C boosts scalp circulation, while its antioxidant action protects follicles from free-radical damage. Creamy avocados supply vitamin E, which increases oxygen uptake and improves circulation to the scalp to promote healthy hair growth. Leafy greens like greens such as Swiss chard, watercress, spinach and cabbage, promote the production of keratin, which is a hair protein that strengthens follicles.

New drug for hair loss

Increasing lactate production genetically increases the stem cells in dormant hair follicles to grow again.
Receding hairlines and thinning crowns can be caused by aging, genetics, hormone imbalance, stress, illness and medications. The metabolic process that takes place in hair follicle stem cells is different from that which takes place in other skin cells.

Cells convert glucose into pyruvate but this metabolite can take one of two paths; it can be sent to the mitochondria and used as energy, or the cells can convert it to a different metabolite known as lactate - the same substance produced during intense exercise that causes a burning sensation in muscles.

Changing the chemical course of the glucose metabolites could change the behavior of inactive follicles. Researchers examined mice that had been genetically engineered to not produce lactate along with those that had been altered to increase lactate production.

They discovered that blocking lactate prevented hair follicle stem cells from being activated while increasing lactate increased the production of hair. When the drugs - RCGD423 and UK5099 were applied to the skin of mice, both increased lactate production and
accelerate hair growth.

Defective immune cells can cause hair loss

Scientists have discovered how immune cells could be used to cure hair loss.
The regulatory T-cells, known as 'Tregs', are all over human body, they control inflammation in the body.

Scientists from the University of California at San Francisco showed how Tregs in the skin send out signals that stimulate hair follicles to regenerate in mice.

Hair follicles are recycling always, Tregs are important for this process, if this immune system is weak or dead, hair will not grow.

A protein called KROX20 that is associated with nerve development, turned on in skin cells that become the hair shaft. The hair cells then produced a protein known as stem cell factor SCF
which is essential for hair pigmentation.

When scientists removed the SCF gene in the hair progenitor cells in mice, their hair turned white. When they removed the KROX20-producing cells, no hair grew and the mice became bald.

Solution to hair loss

Dr Edward Ball, a leading UK hair transplant surgeon from specialist London centre The Maitland Clinic, said the common causes of hair loss are hormonal and genetic.

There are many causes of hair loss: stress, nutrient deficiency and illness. Regular exercise and sound sleep can restore the hair.

Apart from all these, testosterone derivative dihydrotestosterone (DHT) can results in the hair cycle getting shorter and the hair follicles shrinking until they eventually disappear.

Some people are genetically more sensitive to the effects of DHT, which leads to rapid hair loss. Hair loss caused by DHT and a genetic disposition may required surgical treatments.
