Tooth decay occurs when acid in the mouth dissolves the enamel and dentine of the teeth causing formation of holes or cavities. The acid is produced by bacteria that are found within the plaque and thin film that builds up on the teeth.
Aspirin could reverse the effects of tooth decay by triggering teeth to self-reported, reducing the need for filling.
The drug can form new dentine, the hard tooth structure that is usually damaged by decay.
When we eat sugar it interacts with the bacteria within the plaque to produce the destructive acid. If the plaque is allowed to build up, the acid can begin to break down the surface of tooth, causing holes.
After the damage, the cavity begins to eat away at the second level of tooth material that lies beneath the enamel: the dentin. Tooth decay can lead to tooth abscesses, which may result in the tooth having to be removed.
A filling can be used to stop the bacteria in order to prevent the cavity from reaching the tooth's pulp. Fillings may fail and may need to be replaced many times during the life time of the tooth.
Low dose of aspirin increased the rebuilding of minerals which restores strength and function of the tooth, it also stimulated existing stem cells in the tooth to regenerate the damaged tooth structure.

Drinking tequila can prevent osteoporosis
Osteoporosis occurs when the body fails to replace old bone with new. This results in porous and weak skeleton.
Scientists found that substances from the tequila plant may help boost levels of calcium and magnesium, minerals that help keep bones strong.
The study found that sugars from the tequila plant could be used to treat osteoporosis, an agonising condition caused by the weakening of the bones.
Researchers found the blue variety of the Agave tequilana plant, which is used to make tequila, could help to keep the bones healthy.
Substances in the plant improve the absorption of calcium and magnesium in the body, which are essential minerals to help maintain bone health.
Dr Mercedes López, leader of the project from the Centre for Research and Advanced Studies in Mexico, said: 'The consumption of fructans contained in the agave, in collaboration with adequate intestinal micriobiota, promotes the formation of new bone.
To investigate the effects of the tequila plant, the researchers conducted experiments with mice. They removed the ovaries from female mice in order to induce osteoporosis.
Researchers then fed the mice sugars from the tequila plant. After eight weeks bone samples were taken to measure the absorption of minerals and osteocalcin, a protein that indicates the production of new bone.
Dr López said: 'It was found that mice that consumed this fructans [sugars] synthesized nearly 50 per cent more of such protein, in addition that the diametre of their bones was higher compared with the subjects which were not supplied with derivatives of the agave.'
The substances help boost calcium levels by travelling to the large intestine, where they interact with bacteria in the gut.
Once in the large intestine, the agave sugars are able to 'catch' calcium and magnesium molecules and help transport them through the cells of the body.
'This way, we have a second chance to take advantage of the nutrients that were no longer available to the body,' Dr López said.
'However, it is very important that people have a healthy intestinal microbiome, because only then it is possible that bacteria ferment fructans to transform them into fatty acids.'

Potassium as good as sodium for healthy blood pressure
Potassium is a mineral that is needed for human body to function properly, it helps muscles to contract and promotes regular heartbeat.
Diet rich in potassium regulates harmful effects of too much salt in the body, excess consumption of sodium can cause hypertension, eating foods rich in potassium can reduce the blood pressure to normal. Foods rich in potassium are: Carrot, Banana, Sweet potato, Dark leafy greens, Fish, and Avocado.
According to Dr Alicia McDonough of University of California, eating foods high in potassium is equivalent to taking a substance that increases production of urine and reduce sodium in the body.
High intake of potassium leads to excretion of more salt and water and decreases potassium excretion, this will put the blood pressure under control.
Researchers established the link between diet and blood pressure after accessing rodents and discovered that the body does a balancing act to control potassium in the body by using sodium.
